The difference between plate heat exchanger and shell heat exchanger

Simply changing the heat transfer area or process combination only requires adding or reducing plates, and the heat transfer area required to add or reduce can be reached. The layout of high heat transfer coefficient shell and tube heat exchanger is excellent from the perspective of strength, but not ideal from the perspective of heat transfer, because there are bypass between baffle and shell, baffle and tube and shell when the fluid moves in the shell side. The fluid passing through these bypasses is not sufficiently engaged in heat transfer. There are no bypasses and the waviness of the plates can cause turbulence at lower flow rates. It has a high heat transfer coefficient, which is usually 3~5 times that of shell and tube heat exchanger.

 

Under the premise of using the same materials, the production cost must be lower than the shell and tube heat exchanger because the layout requires less information. The thickness of light weight plate heat exchanger is only 0.6~0.8mm, and the thickness of heat exchange tube is 2.0~2.5mm. The shell is much heavier than the layout of the plate heat exchanger. In the case of completing the same heat transfer mission, the heat transfer area required is smaller than that of shell and tube heat exchangers. Plate heat exchanger has a compact layout, and its heat exchange area per unit volume is 2~5 times that of shell and tube heat exchangers. Unlike shell and tube heat exchangers, which need to reserve maintenance space for extraction control, plate heat exchanger occupies an area of about 1/5~1/10 of that of shell and tube heat exchangers when completing the same heat exchange mission.
